A deductible is your share first

A deductible is an amount you may pay toward a covered claim before the insurer pays the remaining covered amount. It is commonly associated with collision and comprehensive coverage, but the policy controls when it applies.

A higher deductible can change the premium, but the tradeoff is not simply “higher is better.” It also changes how much cash you would need after a loss.

Compare deductibles with the same coverage

When comparing options, hold the coverage limits and vehicle details as steady as possible. Then look at the deductible, exclusions, claims process, and total price together. A lower premium can come with a higher share of the risk.

A useful question

Ask: “If my car had a covered loss tomorrow, could I comfortably pay this deductible?” If the answer is no, the lower premium may not be the right fit for your budget.

Coverage details, state rules, and insurer practices can change. Confirm the specifics of any policy with your insurer or a licensed agent before making a decision.
