Compare before you cancel

Gather your current declarations page, renewal date, limits, deductibles, listed drivers, vehicles, and lender or lease requirements. Ask for the new quote using matching details so the comparison is meaningful.

Set the new policy first

Confirm the new insurer has accepted the application and that the effective date and coverage limits are documented before ending the old policy. Ask how proof of insurance will be delivered and whether a lender or lessor needs updated information.

Do not assume a quote is the same as active coverage. The insurer or licensed agent should confirm when the policy begins and what remains subject to underwriting or payment.

Close the old policy and keep records

Follow the old insurer's cancellation process, request written confirmation, and keep both policy records. Check the first new bill, identification cards, deductibles, exclusions, and any difference that made the new option appear less expensive.
